iSCSI (Internet Small Computer Systems Interface) has been categorized by leading industry analysts as a “transformational technology” that enables small to medium sized businesses to install, deploy and easily maintain enterprise-class storage systems based on low-cost commodity hardware and simple-to-use IP networks.
The move from 1GbE Networks to 10GbE Networks, as well as virtualization, is dramatically affecting SAN storage performance using iSCSI. By moving from 1GbE connection speeds to 10GbE – there is a significant performance gap (speed gap) between the amount of data being delivered by the network to the CPU – and the ability of the CPU to effectively process that amount of inbound data. Virtualization places enormous strains on even the most powerful CPU.
